Think Progress rocks, and this is a great idea--spread the word!
ThinkProgress Fellows will be drawn directly from our readership and other progressive blogs, and will become an integral part of our team — writing for ThinkProgress and the Progress Report e-newsletter, monitoring media outlets and conducting other research projects.
Fellows will serve six-month terms, receive a monetary stipend ($3,000), and travel to Washington D.C. for a weekend of training at the Center for American Progress. You’ll be asked to work about 20 hours/week, and you don’t need to reside in Washington.
Applying is easy: just fill out this application and submit it to tpfellows@americanprogressaction.org by April 30. You can also email that address with questions.
great post by Silber at his Power of Narrative on the emotional reality of being marginalized, being excluded, and very often being ridiculed, and even demonized in our society for all sorts of reasons.
... It is one thing to be openly hated and despised, as gays and lesbians are by many on the right. We're used to that, and we got used to it a long time ago. As was required, we manufactured intellectual and emotional armor to protect ourselves. In the current climate, we have to put it on every single damned day. It weighs a great deal, and it exacts an awful price. But without it, we would suffer injuries too grievous to be borne.
But how much worse it is to be cajoled into taking off that armor -- to hear you tell us that you understand we're "just like you" in all the ways that matter, and that we're really "just the same" -- and then to read or hear about "how easy" you think it is to "make fun" of us, especially when our status as Freaks is too obvious. How much worse it is when we believe you, when you tell us you think we're all equal -- except that you can get married, while almost every leading Democrat will say, well, no, we can't get married. But we can have "civil unions." Because, you see, Freaks don't get married. ...

How can we expect to change course in Iraq, if a president is given a pass to claim he has never stayed the course in the first place? How can we expect to hold lawmakers accountable if they are never questioned about their efforts to deliberately mislead us? How can we expect the media to be a watchdog if its leading analysts and news framers face no public sanctions when they disrespect the truth or give credence to fringe ideologies?
--from McClatchy newspapers which has had wonderful coverage of it all--posts by local Iraqi reporters and US ones--a real window into life there.
Unbelievable--instead of reporting the actual story, they make it a Liberals hate America story.
...Ignoring the hate crime aspect of this story, while making it sound like your typical "San Franciscans hate America" story is completely infuriating. When I first read this story, and before I knew what the hell was going on, my first thought was, "So how long before the wingnut bloggers jump on this as another "San Francisco liberals hate America" talking point?" Because as far as I knew, that is exactly what happened.
Sharyar Aziz is going to have two titanium plates in his face for the rest of his life because he was attacked as a faggot because he sings in a choir. Is that somehow not worth reporting? ...
On our media and their ignoring of all the white, extreme rightwing nuts who are caught with massive arms and poisons, etc, but never make the news, while every single Muslim who has an actual plan or not is trumpeted everywhere--it's racist and it's wrong. From the always-excellent Orcinus.
McVeigh, Rudolph are just the tip of a big iceberg--tons and tons and tons more.
interview with Keith Olbermann at Radar--i love him!
